5

Five years ago today, I took the day off to go into town with your mom to buy what we needed to celebrate your first birthday.  I struggled to get your mom to leave you for a few hours.  It would be the first time she left your side since you were born eleven months earlier.  Little did we know that that tearful goodbye that we thought would be for a few hours would turn out to be the last time we saw you alive.

But even though we were scared to leave you alone for the first time ever, we were happy and excited that we were about to celebrate the biggest milestone in your young life.  When you were born we were told you’d never make it beyond a few hours.  Those hours turned into days and the days turned into months.  We celebrated your monthly birthdays because we didn’t know how long we’d have you.  When we approached one year, we had to celebrate in the biggest way surrounded by friends and family.  In the short time you were here on earth, I know you touched many people’s lives.  But none more than mine.

I miss you...
